Guidelines of patient preparation for blood collection for prolactin and monomeric prolactin concentration test
- On the day before blood sampling for prolactin (one day before the examination), the following must be excluded:
- Standard blood sampling is performed in the morning, on an empty stomach (no less than 8 to 12 hours after the previous intake of food), in a procedure room, in a sitting or lying position, in a physiologically calm state, from an ulnar vein, following all the aseptic and antiseptic regulations. Prior to blood sampling, the patient shall rest for 15 minutes.
- In women, prolactin generation depends on the menstrual cycle, it is lower during the luteal phase than during the follicular phase, thus, it is desirable to perform the prolactin analysis at the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle (on day 5 to 7).
- sexual contacts;
- irritation of nipples;
- breast injuries;
- breast examination;
- gynecological examination;
- heating action (sauna etc.);
- physical exercises;
- stress;
- administration of medicinal products (with the exclusion of cases of pharmaceutical therapy appointed by a physician -- in these cases, the observing physician shall make decision on the administration of drugs);
- alcohol and fatty food;
- stop smoking one hour before the test.
