Botulinum therapy
Botulinum therapy
Botulinum therapy at the RCMC can be used to treat symptoms such as chronic migraine, bruxism, and muscle spasticity during stroke

INDICATIONS FOR BOTULINUM THERAPY

    chronic migraine

    Migraine is not just a severe headache. It is a neurological disease that is inherited. If you have been diagnosed with migraine, you can't get rid of it forever, alas, you can only learn to control the frequency and intensity of attacks.

    Botox has revolutionized migraine control in the early 21st century. At some time after its injections in the forehead and interbrow area for cosmetic purposes, patients began to notice a decrease in the number of headache attacks. The Botox molecule blocks the release of pain peptides responsible for the onset of headaches. In addition, Botox locally relaxes the muscles into which it is injected. This eliminates muscle triggers of pain attacks and reduces the number of pain signals to the central nervous system. Indications Botulinum toxin type A for migraine can be done on any patient over the age of 18 who suffers from chronic headaches (more than 15 days of attacks per month, where eight of them correspond to the signs of migraine).

    bruxism

    Botulinum therapy is effective in relieving overstretched masticatory muscles, combats bruxism, and can relieve nighttime involuntary teeth grinding.

    muscle spasticity in stroke

    Spasticity, i.e. pathologic muscle tension due to dysregulation of tone, has different degrees of severity. Botulinum toxin type A preparations successfully reduce spasticity at a score of 3-4 points, i.e. at the extreme degree of severity, causing temporary muscle relaxation, which can lead to a decrease in muscle tone and improvement in functional activity.

METHOD ADVANTAGES

  • proven efficacy, safety and high tolerability;
  • suitable for patients who have comorbidities;
  • is authorized for patients who take a large number of different drugs and for whom other types of preventive treatment of migraine are contraindicated;
  • the drug is injected into the desired areas, so it has an effect only on the desired areas;
  • butolotoxin doses are completely safe and its effects are reversible;
  • the effect of muscle relaxation lasts on average 3-4 months, which allows you to connect physical rehabilitation techniques and improve its effectiveness..

BOTULINUM THERAPY AT THE RCMC

The injections are performed according to a special protocol (PREEMPT paradigm) at fixed points in seven areas of the head and neck. The doctor determines in advance the areas where the drug will be injected. The procedure takes no more than 15-20 minutes. During this time, the doctor makes 31-39 injections with a thin insulin needle. It is recommended to make at least three such sessions of botulinum therapy to assess the effectiveness of treatment. In this case, the first result is noticeable after the first session, and the clinical effect develops on the 7th-14th day and lasts up to three-four months. The result of injections is reversible - this is due to the mechanism of action of the drug itself. Therefore, such a procedure is done as needed every three to four months in a dosage of 155 to 195 units. Sometimes the effect persists for up to a year. The procedure does not cause dependence and addiction.

To treat spasticity after a stroke, before administering the drug, the neurologist conducts a series of diagnostic tests: from general to local, identifying those muscles that are involved in the overstrain of the arm or leg. At the same time just these muscles become targets for botulinum toxin type A drugs. Using various methods of determining the anatomical position, such as instrumental methods - ultrasound or electromyography - the doctor precisely administers the drug that will relax the desired muscle to the desired state.

CONTRAINDICATIONS

  • pregnancy and lactation;
  • hypersensitivity to the drug components;
  • inflammatory processes at the injection site;
  • myasthenia gravis and myasthenia gravis-like syndromes.

BOTULINUM THERAPY PREPARATION

A few days before the procedure it is necessary to exclude alcoholic beverages from the diet and reduce caffeine intake. Antibiotics and blood thinners should not be taken before the procedure.
